The second one with large PSU, it has variable speed on the fan, and it speeds up and down based on the current consumption, which is really, probably on the 3.3V, which is actually pretty clever to anticipate the heat removal demand. A bit ackward supply indeed.

Vectra .... may preferred choice when picking a computer at the computer room to do my work, it was more like the second one, 166Mhz (no MMX). What a machine, all the clone around hung from time to time ... as you would expect from 95 and 98, whe HP .... it was way more stable. Many yeard later I managed to get one. ... 99% of them have been dumped, as they werre uses in offices. Hard to see one of plain brick at the home. Got a second one, loaded with 128MB, 4 x32 dimms and XP ... LOL. Savage. I used the second as parts and spares since case was totalled. AT one poin bought an IDE to SATA adapter (Marvell chip) to fit an SSD. No much difference at all, since it worked only in PIO mode. Fitting the 128GB kingston was another issue, since BIOS only allow 8.4G. I used Dinamic Overlay SW. A copy licensed to Seagate. OF course the main drive wasnt a Segate, but the SW would let to operate if you have a Seagate as slave. So I grab a Seagate and the SW enabled to install the overlay SW on the kingston. After that I put a mechanical, because, this is how is meant to be.

Hey Mike, I've been curious about finding and collecting vintage and retro computers and I've been wondering about where you find these machines at. I've scoured all of my local thrift stores and no luck. Well actually no luck on any computers for that matter. I'm going to see if I have any e-waste centers in my area but any other suggestions on where I can find such a machine? Thank you in advance

    • @miketech1024

I get these as part of large e-waste hauls. That’s probably not the best advice unless you have a lot of space and/or a forgiving spouse.

I have seen corrupted characters during POST before on a display it is due to the monitor being in a non standard mode for that graphics card to display (either resolution or refresh rate) meaning it don't support it. However like you have seen it will sort itself out once you boot into windows. I also thought it was strange the first time I seen it. Sometimes computers can do some quirky things.

That tag on the speaker is from Escorts Kubota Florida Division which is a company based mainly in India with some divisions around the world and they manufacture agricultural machinery, construction machinery, material handling, and railway equipment. So that looks like a company machine used by them might have been for POS or Accounting purposes.

I think you got lucky in that Antec power supply, by far my favorite from the 2000's. Rock solid and run forever. The Trident card while being old is another very reliable card and works on just about any system (an outstanding DOS card). I still use one just like it to test systems on my bench.

The Willamette pentium 4's always reminded me of the Northwood Core Pentium 4's slapped onto an interposer. You can perfectly fit a Northwood Pentium 4 right on top of that heatspreader on the Willamette. Also NMB Technologies Corporation is a MinebeaMitsumi Group company makes mostly computer components fans, power supplies etc. as well as industrial electronics.
